Winter Blues
The night falls in too long
The morning comes in too late
The winter arrives
Everything else is dead
Including my heart
If not also my hands
The wind passes me with such a freeze
That even sun feels cold
And rain isn’t water but ice
And if you’re lucky, not ice but snow
Beautiful on top of everything for a time
Until it’s there too long and you condemn it
But at least the world is pretty, if not my heart
You never know how the whiteness of the snow
Can bring such an evil call to it
Such a violent thought of the blue
The cold that stitches you inside and out
You wanna fight it, you wanna run
But it follows, at least for three months
And if you made it without falling, you’re strong
And if you did fall and get wounded up
You’re still strong too
At least you get back up and conquer yourself
You still try to get up every cold morning
You still move your legs to class or to work
Even though your bed is warm and comfortable
You still made it through the short days
You still made it through the long nights
You’re still cold and stiff and blue
But this winter will not crush you
And as much as you want to curse the season
There will still always be a reason
To live
To carry on
To smile again
It’s hard and it’s tiring
But it’s worthwhile and rewarding
Before you know it
The sun will come back up again
And the snow will melt
And seasons will change again
But until then,
Don’t let the blue dim your red
Burn harder instead
